Approximately 6.7 million American are suffering from chronic wounds.

Compelling statistics include:

• 30.3 million Americans- which is 9.4 percent of the population- has diabetes.

• 25 percent of people over 65 years of age have diabetes.

• Up to 25 percent of all diabetics will develop a foot ulcer in their lifetime.

• An estimated 15 percent of people with a diabetic foot ulcer will experience an amputation.

• Nearly 3 million Americans suffer from pressure ulcers.

• Foot ulcers precede 80 percent of non-traumatic lower extremity amputations.

• Once amputation occurs, 50 percent of patients will develop an ulcer in the opposite limb within 5 years.

• Five years post amputation, the mortality rate is 50 percent.
